NURSING
HOMES RESIDENTS RECORD THEIR MEMORIES-USING
THE nursing homes ACTIVITIES MAIL BOARD.
Now
anyone can help A NURSING HOME RESIDENT
BUILD A life notebook
This posting provides
dozens of interview questions to
give nursing home residents opportunities to talk about their history, personality,
accomplishments and people they have known.
Some
will choose a question and write down their thoughts about it. Others
will need help. Any available person can help them record an entry in
their notebook.
Community organizations, clubs or
groups might consider an ongoing service project of helping
residents build their notebooks, a little at a time.
Families
can provide a variety of old pictures, diplomas, awards or anything that
signifies good memories.
Friends
and acquaintances can add happy thoughts and memories of their own,
about the resident.
This
isn’t meant to be a publishable book, and absolute accuracy should not
stand in the way of creativity. Some resident’s thoughts may be
confused or intermittent, therefore their notebook will build in bits
and pieces, as a collection of whatever is important to a resident at
any given time.
The
greatest benefit of the notebook is in the building of it.
We
all love to talk about ourselves and it’s even better when someone
asks us to talk about ourselves.
The
icing on the cake is when someone feels we are important enough to write
down what we say.
Not
only is the book something they have control over but they can:
-
Show
it to others and talk about it.
-
Use
it as a tool to connect them to where they have been, what they have
done, whom they have known and who cares about them.
We
are not privileged to know which of their memories may come to the
forefront at any given time. Yet, as they randomly leaf through it, a
note, a page, or perhaps a picture might spark a pleasant memory and
bring a moment of joy. And that is what every part of this program is
about – individual moments of joy.
Each
participating resident will need – 3-ring binder , paper, 3-ring sheet
protectors, and index tabs, for separating childhood, adulthood,
parenthood, career, accomplishments
and special events (vacations, celebrations & holidays).
It
is important that each resident has someone to leave the
notebook to when they are gone. Assigning it as a keepsake to a
special person signifies, to them, that their life, thoughts and
experiences are important to someone. If a resident has no family or
friends, a staff member can fill this need.
